Construction Starts on Caretakers Quarters in December

Construction will begin on the Caretaker’s Quarters where the Barn Manager will reside on our property. This was part of the original EQUI-KIDS plan and it is the final phase of construction and the Capital Campaign. Although cameras are placed throughout the EQUI-KIDS facility, the Caretaker’s Quarters will ensure we have someone onsite to ensure the security and care of our horses, and to provide a 24-hour presence at the organization.

Knights of Columbus Host Annual Holiday Party for the Families of EQUI-KIDS

The Knights of Columbus, Council 4632 – Father Nicholas J. Habets, will host the Annual Holiday Party for the families of EQUI-KIDS. This event will take place Sunday, December 4 at the Knights of Columbus facility off of Prosperity Road in Virginia Beach from 2pm-4pm.

The Knights and Ladies Auxiliary serve dinner and make gifts for each of the riders which is delivered by a “special visitor.” It is an annual tradition and the event is attended by the riders, their families, volunteers, staff and Board members of EQUI-KIDS.

EQUI-KIDS Welcomes New Board Member

Herb Davis, President of HBD, Inc. has joined the Board of Directors at EQUI-KIDS. Herb, a longtime supporter of the organization, along with his family, was voted in as a Board Member November 2011.

Mobile Equestrian Outreach Unit Travels 200 Miles This Fall for Education

The Mobile Equestrian Outreach Unit (MEO) has traveled 200 miles so far this Fall to educate the public on equine assisted activities.

Jamie Link, EQUI-KIDS’ Program Outreach Coordinator, travels to various Festivals, Fairs, Schools and other community events in the region with the MEO and Maybelline. Maybelline, the smallest animal in the EQUI-KIDS herd at 10 hands high, travels with the MEO as EQUI-KIDS’ mobile ambassador.

The first of its kind in the country, the MEO was funded by a grant received from the Ronald McDonald House Charity in 2002. This 28-foot, wheelchair accessible custom-made trailer includes a horse stall and interactive displays. The MEO’s purpose is to expand awareness and to educate the public on the benefits of equine assisted activities for individuals with disabling conditions.
