Founded in 1989, EQUI-KIDS Therapeutic Riding Program has grown to become one of the largest accredited equine riding programs in the country benefiting the special needs community. Our team of hard-working horses provide equine-assisted activities to a diverse group of riders each week and our programs offer support to individuals with disabilities such as Down syndrome, autism, spina bifida, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, amputation, mental and physical disabilities, attention deficit disorder and more.
Therapeutic riding helps to develop self-awareness and self-confidence, improvement in concentration and fine motor skills, and physical benefits including muscle strengthening and stretching. Our horses provide the challenged rider with a feeling of freedom and independence that may be limited in their everyday life.
Our therapeutic riding program enables our students to experience a world without disabilities.
EQUI-KIDS is a Premier Accredited Center through PATH, Intl., and a member of the Therapeutic Riding Association of Virginia. EQUI-KIDS’ therapeutic riding instructors are PATH, Intl. certified and continue their education every year to ensure the highest level of professionalism in the industry. Currently, the program has over 300 volunteers who support our mission outreach by sharing their passion to make a positive, impactful difference in the lives of others every day.
In addition to our seasonal lesson program, we offer a School Partnership Program to work with special needs students at local elementary and middle schools, as well as an EQUI-VETS Service Program to offer equine-assisted activities to wounded service men and women.
The vision of EQUI-KIDS Therapeutic Riding Program is to be recognized as the premier therapeutic riding program in the United States; upholding the highest standards of excellence to serve special needs individuals through our mission-creating impactful, positive, life-changing experiences for our participants, donors, volunteers and the community at large.
